T-Mobile G1’s POP3/IMAP e-mail going haywire

As with any launch of an intricate smartphone, there are always some problems. However, it is important that the manufacturers of the phone work quickly to solve the problems of their users. Within a couple of days of the official T-Mobile G1 launch, there have been several problems, and now many users are posting on the T-Mobile forums saying they are having trouble accessing their e-mail.
Whenever a user tries to send an e-mail, it either doesn’t send or sends as null. In addition, it is nearly impossible to receive e-mail and this isn’t just associated with one e-mail service, it’s practically tied to all of them, except for one - Gmail.
Of course, Google would make sure their own e-mail service functions the best. Fortunately, a T-Mobile representative, Will, commented on the forums in effort to calm the people and work with them through this difficult time for T-Mobile. He states that this e-mail problem is being looked into by T-Mobile in high priority, and he goes on to add:
“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client. Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”
He seems to think that by saying T-Mobile has encountered such problems before, people will be reassured that T-Mobile has fixed it before and they will fix it again. Feel free to let us know if you are encountering any similar problems with your G1.

Palm Pre Information & Updates
Palm just introduced their next-gen smartphone, the Palm Pre, and next-gen operating system, Palm webOS. Gadgetell's got the latest Pre and webOS information and news for you right here.

I setup an pop account for my comcast email and my godaddy domain email with great ease. Can send and receive no issues. But what is happening, is that, rather than downloading new email only and letting me delete or move from the device, it is sync’ing with the pop email accounts. By sync’ing, it will always refresh the inbox on the pop account to the device and show them as unread as they have NOT been read since the latest sync. I had also DELETED email from the POP email accounts on their server and when the device refreshed/sync’d my email accounts again, those messages were no longer gone.
What is happening here is that pop email on the device is NOT accounting as an account on the device by is simpy sync’ing with the pop accounts and displaying what is on them to the device. AND it refreshes each time you enter the email on the devise therefore the message will NEVER show as read.
The device is not functioning as we expected or advertised as it is acting as a viewer of your pop email NOT as an email account itself.
on November 4, 2008 at 09:23 AM - LINKT-mobile G1 has IMAP problems. Try to sned/receive via IMAP to a domino server - good luck….
My older phone whish id a Palm Trio with Verizon service also uses IMAP to sych with my domino / lotus server. It works most of the time. Occaionally it gets out of sych and I have to play some games to get it to work. This is why I switched to G1/android. Unfortunately G1 needs work. I do think they will get it to work, but its not rdy for prime time.
on November 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM - LINKJust got my G1 8 days ago and I’m not happy. POP3 e-mail accounts just won’t stick. After I set up my accounts, the device pulls the e-mails okay, but when I go to another task or when the unit’s screen times out to black, all POP3 e-mail accounts are gone when I go back to it. They have to be set up all over again. It’s maddening. And after setting them up AGAIN, all e-mails I deleted previously are back even though I set the device to delete e-mails off server. I had high hopes, but I am very disappointed. Maybe I got a bad one, so I’m going to exchange it and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, I’m switching to Blackberry.
on November 10, 2008 at 04:50 PM - LINKThe eMail client problem is serious and is described in some detail within the T-Mobile Forum. When T-Mobile G1 Support is contacted about these problems they generally provide only some suggestions and claim that they are not aware of any significant problems with eMail. When asked about when the problems will be resolved they say that it is Google’s problem. When Google is contacted through their 800 number, the operator says that it is T-Mobile’s responsibilty to take such calls and refuse to connect to anyone within Google.
Try using the eMail client to access Gmail ...
on December 3, 2008 at 12:46 AM - LINKI have had my G1 since October, I am unable to use my MSN email with it. I set it up, and it loads all the emails just fine. But after that everytime I try to access my email it says connection error. I have called T-Mobile three times, have gone to the T-Mobile store where I bought it, no help whats so ever. They are not admiting any problems, but tell me MSN might be the issue, and not the G1.It seems funny I have been able to use MSN on other smart phones with no problems.
on January 18, 2009 at 04:55 PM - LINKI use my G1 to receive emails from clients about issues they are having with the software program I manage. on April 16, 2009 at 08:52 AM - LINKHas anybody figured out how to solve the G1 email setup issue. I am not really excited about the outgoing and incoming “Imap” and Pop” server setting. I get error message “unable to connect to the server. I have read most threads and forums, still doesn’t work for me. Any luck from anyone out their? I will seriously like to use my work email account with the G1 phone.
