T-Mobile G1 launch party: cab4me

by Iyaz Akhtar on Oct 17, 2008 at 08:58 AM

T-Mobile G1 Launch PartyLast night was the T-Mobile G1 launch event in New York City.  Gadgetell was there to see what was new in the Android world.  The event itself was set in a club with a live band; it was very different from the product unveiling last month.  What did they have there?  Plenty of stuff, so check back during the day for more including videos.  First off, let’s take a look at an application called “cab4me.”

cab4me

This application was not finished yet, but it made a lot of sense.  cab4me is an application that uses the G1’s location awareness to find you and then find you a cab.  It’s a really simple idea and if it works will definitely be incredibly helpful when you’ve partied too hard or just need to get somewhere.

Android Developer Challenge winner

Since the app is a part of the Android Market, there is no charge for cab4me.  Henning Boeger and Konrad Huebner developed the application as a part of the Android Developer Challenge and the application won $275,000 as an award winner.

cab4me’s not done yet

The version of cab4me running at the event was merely “cab4me light” and did not have full functionality yet.  The interface was very simple.  You launch cab4me, it shows you a map with a cab symbol.  Click the symbol and you’ll be calling a taxi in no time.
