Every once in a while, some new piece of technology comes out that changes education forever. Just think about how much computers are used in classrooms today. An organization known as SynergyNet has developed “an interactive multi-touch desk that looks and acts like a large version of an Apple iPhone”.
SynergyNet apparently got the idea from watching a classroom on Star Trek. I don’t remember seeing any episode like that, but I do remember that the opening classroom scene in Serenity had something like this. The company hopes that every desk will be a multi-touch by the year 2010.
The interactive touchscreen desk encourages students to take part in the action. SynergyNet hopes that this will help more female students get involved, as well as disabled students. I would have to say that if my school had desks like this, I believe that I would have learned more. Of course, I probably would have used it to play some touch-based video games while the teacher wasn’t looking.
In short, SynergyNet’s interactive touchscreen desk can draw the student in. I would say it is worth the investment in education.
