Sprint unveils Palm Pre plans
Sprint has announced the pricing plans for the highly anticipated Palm Pre. Sprint users will be able to buy the phone with one of Sprint’s Simply Everything plans, which include unlimited data and texting along with a bucket of minutes starting at 450 for individuals ($69.99 a month) and 1500 for families($129.99 a month) and going up to unlimited ($99 and $199 a month respectively).
Unfortunately Sprint is still refusing to give any information on how much the handset itself will cost or when it will ship. Many will recall that the Pre was unveiled at CES back in January. All anyone seems to know for sure is that it will be made available sometime during the first half of this year. If that means June, Palm may have made a monumental blunder. Announcing a new phone and then waiting six long months to release it will most likely result in two things, neither good for the company. Customers will put off any planned upgrades to existing Palm handsets, such as the Treo Pro and Centro II, which will cause sales figures to slump, or they’ll simply get angry and fed up with the foot dragging and buy a competing smartphone.
A quick note to Palm: Palm, get this released ASAP! Are you forgetting that Palm fans have been waiting several years already? This could be the handset that returns your company to its glory days, but only if you get the lead out and release it quickly.

BOYCOTT THE PRE!
They are forcing you to buy into their “Everything” plans when original (and loyal) customers using the SERO plans already have UNLIMITED DATA, UNLIMITED TEXT AND PLENTY OF MINUTES to use. Why switch to these “Unlimited” plans when we have everything we need already on our existing SERO plans?
Customer since 2000…and I am not leaving Sprint, just not buying their Pre…
on May 26, 2009 at 01:46 PM - LINKSpare me. The SERO plan was the most abused program Sprint ever offered. If you want to keep your ridiculously low priced plan then you’ll have to accept being excluded from upgrading to certain new handsets. That’s just how it goes. You can’t have the cake and eat it too. Sprint’s gotta make money somehow!
on May 26, 2009 at 05:15 PM - LINKI don’t have a SERO plan myself, but I do have a legacy plan (Free & Clear Family 2000, unlimited data/text/night&weekend; with 2000 shared anytime minutes, all for $100/month plus taxes, etc.) that probably won’t support the Pre. Sucks.
on June 1, 2009 at 06:50 AM - LINKKEVIN - I have this exact plan as well. It’s making it VERY difficult for me to make the decision to switch, as I am very ready to move into the current century with a smart phone. I almost bailed on Sprint to go to the G1 and T-Mobil. But, I talked myself out of it when I didn’t like the hardware. When the Pre was announced, I was very excited (and still am). I just know that I’m going to have to make a difficult decision about it.
on June 3, 2009 at 07:31 AM - LINKPhil, wow, that is awesome! I was starting to think I was the only one left on these old plans. I did talk to Sprint and basically the most comparable plan (compatible with the Pre, anyway) is the “Everything Data 1500 Shared Family service plan” for $129.99/month. It includes two lines, with each additional line costing $19.99/month. They told me since I currently have two free lines, they would waive the $19.99/month fee for that third line. So my cost would be $129.99/month plus taxes/surcharges.
Soooooo… $29.99/month more to get the Pre (or the Instinct, or any other phone that “won’t work” with my current plan). WHY these phones can’t be used on our plan, I have no idea—I’ve had the PPC-6700, the Touch, and now the Touch Pro, and obviously they work fine. These ‘special’ phones—Instinct and Pre—requiring a new Everything plan is just… silly. I think they just took their mainstream, most-likely-to-sell-like-the-iPhone models and decided to force people onto an Everything plan because that’s a money maker. Bleh.
Since my wife and I both want the Pre, we’re considering it. But man, it’s a tough decision!
Glad to hear someone else has this old plan, though. :) Been with Sprint for over 10 years now and don’t have any plans on switching as long as they keep treating me well. I know there are plenty of dissatisfied Sprint customers, but I’m not one of them.

on June 3, 2009 at 07:43 AM - LINKI’ve been looking at several of these forums and I am yet to see someone post a plan similar to mine. I want the pre just as much as the next person but would tell me if you would change this plan for the SE….
Free & Clear Plan 3000,
3000 mins
unlimited text
unlimited data, email, web
sprint navigation
tv and music
all for the whopping price of $20 a month
Does anyone think in the future we’ll be able to crack the pre to be able to use it with any plan?
on June 5, 2009 at 07:38 AM - LINKJay, I’m pretty sure your plan can’t be beat and that I’d be happy never having an upgraded phone again if I had it. Well…. maybe. I dunno, I sure do like upgrades. ;) At least all the other phones work, like the Touch Pro (and presumably the upcoming Touch Pro2 and Diamond2).
How the heck did you swing that plan for $20/month?!

on June 5, 2009 at 07:53 AM - LINKSorry guys, but the fact is you can have a super cheap plan or a cool phone, but not both. It doesn’t make financial sense for Sprint.
on June 5, 2009 at 08:12 PM - LINKI have the same Free & Clear Plan - I got it because I worked at an electronic retailer selling mobile phones. I’ve had the same plan now for almost 2 years even though I haven’t worked at the retailer for about a year and a half.
I don’t know if the Pre is supported on the plan or not. I certainly hope it is, because I want a Pre!
on June 30, 2009 at 01:26 PM - LINKKeith, nope, it won’t work. Like the Instinct (and Instinct S30), it requires an ‘Everything’ plan.
on June 30, 2009 at 01:28 PM - LINKDarn. Thanks for the response. I guess I’ll just have to be happy with HTC phones (I love my Touch but I definitely want to upgrade soon).
on June 30, 2009 at 01:30 PM - LINKHold out just a liiiitttle bit longer and you can spring for the Touch Pro 2 or the Touch Diamond 2. I don’t think there’s any official release date, but it shouldn’t be too much longer. Hopefully by September. I’m sticking with my Touch Pro, though. But going from the Touch to the Touch Pro 2 or Diamond 2 would be awesome—I say go for it. :) My main gripe with my Touch Pro is the overheating issue—and when it overheats, it stops charging until it cools down. I’m glad the protection is in place, because it beats the alternative (an exploding battery), but I sure wish it didn’t have the overheating issue to begin with. Something as simple as using Bluetooth on a phone call for 15-20 minutes will cause it to overheat, so even if you have it on a charger while you’re talking, the battery will actually run down anyway and eventually die. Aside from that, the Touch Pro is awesome and the Touch Pro 2 should be even more awesome from what I’ve seen/read—just not worth the ugprade for *me*.
Are you on PPCGeeks.com or XDA-Developers.com, by the way? LOTS of good information on those sites if you’re not already familiar with them.
