Sony wants to make its own tablet, to rival the iPad

by Cheng Hung on Feb 4, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Sony Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda announced their desire of entering the tablet market at a post-earnings report news conference earlier today. Although not in a rush to start churning out tablets any time soon, Sony is pretty content with the success of its ebook reader, the Reader Daily Edition. From the looks of it, they aren’t too worried of the iPad affecting sales of their ebook readers.

What sets the iPad apart is the elegant and seamless OS. Can Sony make one that’s on par with its rival? Oneda admits that they are lagging “a little” behind Apple, but given their track record, Sony is usually a year behind Apple in terms of handheld devices. There’s no official confirmation on when the Sony tablet might start appearing, though. If you’re looking for a spec sheet, well, there’s none. Sony’s just in the talks of making one, they haven’t actually designed or produced any prototypes. Will the upcoming Sony tablet be a spin-off of Sony Dash?
