Sony updates the Vaio UX with a 32 GB Flash drive
Sony will release a premium version of its Vaio UX Micro PC with the same specs as the original except that it will use a 32 GB Flash-based disk as opposed to a regular mechanical hard drive.
The new UX’s significant specs include:
- Intel Core Solo U1400 (Ultra Low Voltage)
- Intel GMA950 integrated graphics
- 512 MB DDR2 PC3200 RAM
- 32 GB Flash drive
- 4.5” WSVGA display (1024x600)
- Keyboard, stylus and biometric fingerprint sensor
- Integrated Bluetooth, WLAN and WWAN capability
It might seem that the UX Micro PC series competes against Samsung’s Q1 UMPC, and on paper it has got the Q1 beat in all technological aspects; it’s smaller, lighter and has better specs than the Q1. But upon closer inspection, the UX Micro PC is about two and a half times more expensive than the Q1 and will still be priced out of reach for most people. So, in the end, Sony will probably get the higher-end niche market with their Vaio UX Micro PC while Samsung’s Q1 captures the mid/lower-end of the market.
The new Vaio UX Micro PC will be available in February 2007 for about $2,500. The current version (VGN-UX280P) is available starting at $1,900.

I’m not a huge UMPC fan, but you’re comparing apples and oranges here. The Samsung’s Q1 with Solid State Disk is now selling for $1,999. The original Q1 has a rotational hard drive and is about half that price. The New Samsung w/SSD will have to compete against the UX1 w/SSD. They will have to go head-to-head to fight over execs who can pony up more than $2k for an extra computer. The question is, who really “needs” a SSD and will they be willing to pay about $650 extra for tiny drive. Samsung’s UMPC product lead talked about the new Q1 here:
