Lately, Japanese flat TV manufacturers have been quite busy forming strategic alliances to control their investments, gear up for sharp price declines due to competition and meet the growing demand for flat TVs worldwide.

Following Pioneer’s decision to outsource their plasma panels is a new joint venture between Sony and Sharp. Under this partnership, Sony will own 34% of Sharp’s $3.5 billion LCD panel manufacturing plant which is expected to be completed in March 2010. Sharp will control 66% share in the soon-to-be world’s largest LCD factory.

Since Sony is currently buying their LCD panels in bulk from Samsung Electronics in South Korea, this strategic alliance will give Sony more control over production runs to secure steady supply and minimize its dependence to its current supplier.

As for Sharp, this will ensure that its so-called 10th-generation factory will have a steady and strong demand once it becomes operational. 

Sony and Sharp will hold a joint press conference today to explain and answer any questions regarding this powerful tandem.
