Sony FED, yet another display techonology

by Michael Yurechko on Apr 16, 2007 at 10:39 PM

FED Technology

As if we didn’t have enough display technologies floating around already, Sony has come out and released yet another, meet FED.  FED or Field Emission Display is a technology similar to that of SED but uses a “grid of nanotubes to emit the electrons that excite phophor dots in order to create the image”, whatever that means.

To display their point, Sony recently displayed a new 19.2-inch 1280 x 960 pixel, 400cd/m2 demonstrating the technology. The device sports an amazing 20,000:1 contrast ratio and demonstrates less power consumption, all in a super-thin frame.

All-in-all the device is great, and you won’t come across dead pixels until over 20% of the emitter fails. Unfortunately it is prone to the same screen-flicker that regular CRTs have…well I guess we can’t have everything. Sony plans to release TVs by 2009 with this technology in models up to 30 inches, with full HD support.
