Sleeping Beauty going interactive with BD Live Blu-ray technology

Walt Disney is set to release one of its popular animated creations, “Sleeping Beauty” as a Blu-ray DVD. Apart from this modern-day feature, the classic Disney movie will allow youngsters to watch it along with friends in other locations via chat. They can watch the movie while toying with their laptops, PDA’s, and cellphones, which will allow for greater interaction among the young audience. Parents too, can participate by recording video messages that are set to appear on the screen at particular scenes, the child can virtually watch the movie with their parents.

The technology that connects the Blu-ray discs with the Internet is called the BD Live. This innovation is pursued in order to bring interest in the Blu-ray technology. Now that kids are more interactive than ever, this form of entertainment fits their lifestyle. A study also showed that people tend to watch a movie with their laptop nearby, as confirmed by Lori McPherson, senior vice president and general manager of Walt Disney.

However, the biggest challenge in this kind of technology is hardware. The first release of Blu-ray players are confirmed to not be compatible with BD Live technology, and that they cannot be upgraded.

Right now, Disney is still trying to figure out how to sell the Blu-ray idea to the mass market to make them comfortable with this new technology.
