Samsung drops the ultra-portable P200 laptop

Samsung ultra-portable P200 laptop

Samsung has unveiled their latest ultra-portable notebook. The P200 features a 12.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics card, Bluetooth 2.0, a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam, 6-in-1 card reader, an ExpressCard slot and two USB ports. Aside from a decent set of specs the one downfall is the 4.1-pounds that it weighs in at.

According to Samsung the P200 will give you over 3 hours of real world battery life, of course I am sure with some true user testing we could expect to see that a little bit lower.

Sadly the P200 does not look like it will be landing in the States anytime soon, instead headed for the European and Korean market. The P200 is currently available and retailing for €999 (around $1,517 US).

I personally wish laptops makers would work on getting the larger ones to be more user friendly rather than putting all their efforts into making them smaller.  What good does it do me to carry around a tiny laptop when it requires me to bring my own keyboard and mouse along to use it

While personally I am enjoying seeing the latest craze with the ultra-portable and smaller sized laptops, they are truly not the best choice for everyone. It imagine this phase will die down in time and we will get back to seeing more “normal” 15-inch sized notebooks becoming popular again.

You do make a very good point, the smaller laptops, such as the Eee are difficult to type on.

I don’t think this 12.1” notebook has anything special to make it attractive for buyers. I think laptop makers should concentrate rather on special characteristics of a laptop that would make it unique to others. Being more stylish or cheap or better ram etc.

I don’t think it will attract many regular laptop users, being small and lightweight has its place but I just can’t use something so small without thinking I am going to break it.

The other thing bad about such lightweight notebooks, like the mac air, is the number of people who accidentally throw them away.  i saw a story not long after they were out that this was actually a problem at airports and coffee shops.  They simply get tossed in the trash or recycle bin along with your used newspaper.
