RIP: Disney Mobile

Disney Mobile

Disney has announced that they will be shutting down their Disney Mobile service effective December 31, 2007. As we have already seen this year with another Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) carrier the rent some bandwidth model is not as easy to run as expected. Disney seems to be planning to take care of the customers and not leave them wondering where the service went. In addition to giving about 3 months notice they are offering a reimbursement program covering handsets as well as accessories and content purchased directly through Disney Mobile. You can also port your number and terminate your contract prior to December 31, 2007 and Disney will waive early termination fees provided your account is paid in full.

It’s sad to see anything from Disney come to an end, but as a parent with a “Disney loving child” I am glad that I am not going to have to explain why I would not let her have a Disney phone. Disney is also not letting go of their Disney Mobile’s Family Center suite and hope to license it for use with another carrier.
