A year in the making, the 2.00 firmware for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is finally ready to be released this week. The update, as its whole-numbered name suggests is chock full of new features, though none too revolutionary.
Starting with the most noticeable, when in the XMB you’ll see the “Information Board”, which is a list of (Sony-approved) gaming and PlayStation related news. Unfortunately, the option of importing your own RSS feeds will only come around in future updates to the system. Also included is the ability to turn the PS3 on and off from remote locations, using your PSP. This is convenient for when you want to update your console away from home.
Other features include the ability to use, change and make themes for the XMB and to change the color of the waves in the background of the XMB (something available for a long time in the PSP, I might add). You can also make playlists out of you music and photos. The device now supports Canon printers. Finally, additional sorting options have been added along with Dualshock 3 support.
While this firmware was much anticipated, it doesn’t exactly step up to the plate. Well, its still a solid upgrade so all PS3 owners have no reason not to upgrade.
