Pen-to-PC in a whole new way

by Christian Milsom on Jun 24, 2008 at 03:42 PM

Zpen

For those who are busy, outgoing and are often in meetings, using your laptop (however small) is often not very practical so you end up taking notes through the old fashioned, and lot cheaper method, the pen. However not only does that hurt your hand after a while, but you get a result that you cant search, send off instantly, or mess around with on Word. In fact you often end up re-typing it anyway to make it usable which is frustratingly time consuming, and makes you wish there was a better solution.

Well here it is; the Dane-Elec Digital Zpen. This looks (for the most part) like a normal pen, and you use it just like a normal pen writing on normal paper in a normal way, but the reason for its $140 price tag is that it is far from ordinary. When you use the pen and its receiver you are effectively saving yourself the effort of typing, and having to create a more usable document later. The receiver tracks the movement of the pen through a very clever technique, when the pen writes on the paper it emits a noise at ultrasonic levels, which are then picked up by two microphones in the receiver. This allows it to track the movement and record it on the 1GB flash memory that it has.

The clever bit comes when you put the receiver into your USB drive, because it includes software that can recognize and learn your handwriting style and then convert it into normal neat ‘PC’ text. This then can be easily copied/edited/sent on Word or a similar text editor. This is a brilliant device that suddenly makes note taking a whole lot easier. Let’s just hope it can be as accurate as is sounds neat.
