Palm Pre Information & Updates
Palm just introduced their next-gen smartphone, the Palm Pre, and next-gen operating system, Palm webOS. Gadgetell's got the latest Pre and webOS information and news for you right here.

As the iPhone App Store continues to grow, Palm Pre owners are stuck with a rather slim selection of apps so far. The recently released SDK will help alleviate that problem, though there are some major differences between the Pre and iPhone SDK. The biggest difference is that the webOS SDK (officially known as the “Mojo SDK“does not allow for graphics acceleration, while the iPhone does, allowing the iPhone to have games.
Palm may be looking to allow graphics acceleration, however. The framework for such will probably not be available for a while as the biggest clue is the fact that Palm is looking for a Game Frameworks Engineer for webOS. The job specifics include familiarity with graphics acceleration and pixel shading, which makes sense. With such a large portion of the iPhone App Store being dedicated to games, the Palm Pre needs some of its own. We know it’s possible to play 3D games on the device, thanks to the hackers who managed to get a PlayStation emulator running smoothly on the device.
Having games available on the Palm Pre, and future WebOS devices would certainly be a big help to Palm. While right now its emphasis is far from the availability of apps on the platform, it will eventually need to have something more than multitasking to compete with the iPhone in the general public. A quick look at the App Store shows that games occupy a majority of both the paid and free top apps lists, and that cannot be ignored. With this eventual release, if developers can get behind it, choosing a Palm Pre over and iPhone might get a lot easier for a lot of people.
