OpenMoko Neo 1973 in Orange

OpenMoko is hoping to have the Neo 1973 in consumers hands by the second half of 2008. The Neo 1973 is a Linux-based open source smartphone and is currently being offered free of charge to a designated group of software developers in Taiwan.

The first group of developers will help to further develop or add new applications to the phone. After the initial group wraps up OpenMoko plans to then sell the Neo 1973 to general developers for a second round of work and testing, then finally have the device available to general consumers by mid to late 2008.

The Neo 1973 will feature a 2.8-inch VGA TFT color touchscreen display, USB 1.1, Bluetooth 2.0, Micro SD storage slot, integrated AGPS and have 2.5G – tri band (900/1800/1900), voice, CSD, GPRS support.
