Online storage isn’t real exciting to me: I see a box online that I can put things and forget about them.  But the judges at this year GSMA’s Mobile Innovation Marketplace- Americas (part of the GSM show in Barcelona) saw something more in this year’s Top Innovator in the category of Most Innovative Consumer Application or Service and a Global Semi-Finalist in the Americas leg of the 2009 Mobile Innovation Global Award Competition.  They selected SugarSync, an intriguing new service that is pushing the concept.

I used “pushing” there for a reason.  Their patent-pending service brings “push” changes to your files in much the same way Exchange “pushes” new mail to your device.  Yes, change a file and it is backed up online just like that.  But that box online I envisioned isn’t a box at all with SugarSync, rather you can access your files online, you can even share them with others.

In the last few weeks, CNET ranked SugarSync with a five-star review and dubbed it the “most useful sync tool ever,” PC Magazine awarded it four stars, and Laptop Magazine gave it both its Editor’s Choice and Ultimate Choice awards, saying SugarSync “changed the way we look at online backup…this is online storage done right.”

I’ve been using SugarSync this week and so far, I am really liking what I am seeing.  I’ll have a full review up in the coming week.  Early indications are this is one to watch and the folks at GSMA agree.
