OLPC spin-out working on a $75 laptop

There are so many things going on with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project these days. Aside from parting ways with Intel, a new venture established by former OLPC chief technology officer, Mary Lou Jepsen, is now developing a $75 laptop with low-power displays.

Pixel Qi, the name of this spin-out company, believes the XO laptop is just the first step. According to its official site, the company will also focus on bringing its patented low-cost and low-power screens into mainstream laptops, mobile phones and digital cameras.

Jepsen has resigned two weeks ago to concentrate on this venture. Still, she promised to maintain its professional relationship with OLPC by providing products at cost.

Although the main objective of OLPC is to sell laptops for only $100, production inefficiencies and escalating costs pushed the retail price to $200. Hopefully, Pixel Qi’s promising technologies can really bring down costs and make it more affordable for the less fortunate people around the globe.
