OLPC XO Laptops Begin Arriving

The first XO OLPC laptops have begun arriving in Uruguay. They are reported to have given out about a thousand laptops in the first three days, with another seven thousand scheduled to be given out over the next two weeks, followed by another 90 thousand over the next few months. The laptops that were handed out were upgraded to a beta build of the Ship 2 software and had some custom code added at the request of Ceibal, a technical staff member.

OLPC is using Bitfrost security, which will protect the laptops during shipping. The security deactivates the laptops and they cannot be used until they are activated with a special key upon arrival. Which means that should anyone be cruel enough to steal a shipment, they will in turn be getting some non-functioning machines.

With such a great project, its nice to see some follow up knowing that at least some of these machines are ending up in the hands on the children that need them most. Of course they should be arriving here in the US any day now as they had begun shipping earlier this week, personally I am interested in seeing some more reviews.
