Weighing it at 1.1lbs, the $1,299 Canon HG10 will be in stores in October and clearly demonstrates that camcorders are continuing to get smaller and better as the trend away from tape to hard drive continues.

With 15 hours of video, a 40 gigabyte drive that will store 5.5 hours of highest quality recordings and features including:

  • a tenfold optical zoom range plus 200x digital magnification
  • image stabilization

this should be on a lot of peoples list to check out when it is launched.

The HG10 uses the up-and-coming AVCHD format, which gives roughly the quality of MPEG-2 video in half the storage space. The device itself is compact — 1.1 pounds and 3.2 by 3 by 5.1 inches, but with a 2.7-inch screen that has a wide angle view.
