Motorola reports $3.6B loss.  Wait, a $2,000 phone can’t save Moto?

Motorola swings to $3.6 billion dollar loss, a $2000 phone can't save them

Motorola posted a whopping $3.6B in losses for the fourth quarter of 2008.  The loss is attributed to the cell phone division, as all other Moto divisions saw profits.  Moto also announced the departure of the company’s CFO for unexplained reasons.  The dude just vanished.

But forget about disappearing CFOs.  Motorola’s cell phone division needs help and cutting the already announced 7,000 jobs doesn’t look to be enough.  LG passed Moto for the #3 spot in cell phone shipments.  Moto did manage to ship the $2,000 Aura phone, so there’s one bright spot for them.

Word is Motorola will favor Android, which is cool.  Rumor has it (from Moto) Windows Mobile 7 won’t be here until 2010 which means no one will be really interested in their WinMo phones until then.  Android should prove to be an interesting filler if Moto can outfit it with a compelling device.

Unfortunately, that has been there problem.  The Q9 was a nice device back what, two years ago?  Styling has had fits and starts but nothing as iconic as the RAZR.  It is time to swing for the fences, Moto, or take a seat on the pine.

Look at all the phones they offer.  A simplification of the line might be order, no?  Anyone see anything that would get you off a sofa to buy?  What is going to happen to Moto if Apple throws out an iPhone Nano at $99?  Bad things, very bad things will happen that will make this announcement of losing $3.6 Billion look reminiscent of a birthday party.
