In Amsterdam at the IBC 2007, Motorola announced that it had shipped its two millionth Internet Protocol set top box within 5 months of shipping the first, and at the same time announced it has joined the Microsoft Mediaroom Interoperability and Qualification Lab (IQ Lab) for digital video encoders.  What is that, it is “a program which will enable the ongoing interoperability and compliance of encoders used in deployments of the award-winning Microsoft Mediaroom multimedia and IPTV software platform.”

“The television market is fundamentally changing as consumers demand more choice, more control and more interactivity in the way they access TV,” said Doug Means, corporate vice president, Motorola Home & Network Mobility. “Motorola has a 50-year heritage in the video business and we’re committed to leading the market, helping it grow and ensuring that our customers are armed with the best technology to serve the most demanding of viewers.”

This impressive growth demonstrates the rapid growth of the IPTV market.

The rational behind the second announcement is to implement the highly efficient MPEG-4 compression technology which wil benefit from greatly reduced evaluation time through interoperability with the Microsoft Mediaroom environment.

“We are building on our global IPTV leadership by ensuring that our customers have access to solutions that work flawlessly on their networks,” added Doug Means, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager. “As demand for IPTV continues to grow and markets transition from MPEG-2 to MPEG 4 compression technologies, telcos can now have total confidence in the combined Motorola/ Microsoft IPTV solution without the need for lengthy evaluation.”
