More choice to come in iTunes?

by Robert Nelson on Apr 12, 2007 at 09:52 PM

iTunes 7 LogoA subscription service to come from Apple? The rumor continues even though Apple has been set against this since the launch of iTunes in 2003. Hopefully we will soon see the release of a service from Apple that will be “all you can eat”?

It comes to the question that has been posed many times before, do you want to own or rent your music? Apple seems to think that we want to own it. It can also be said that with the current state of DRM you truly do not own your music the way it is. With the recent EMI DRM-free music announcement maybe some things are going to really start changing Apple’s digital music world.

“The number one factor retarding the acceptance of the subscription model is the dominance of Apple. The idea of subscribing to music is new to most consumers so when the dominant player doesn’t talk about it, the idea seems out of the mainstream for most consumers,” Leigh said.

It’s hard to argue with the above statement, maybe Apple should let the consumer’s decide. I believe this model would be widely accepted by both iTunes users and music labels, why would a label not like the subscription model. It’s money every month. Apple finally killed off the iPhone rumor maybe they can do the same for this.
