Mobile phone bits: New Android phone and the Palm Pre on TV

by Natesh Sood on Jun 2, 2009 at 07:08 PM
T-Mobile G1

The T-Mobile G1 has been a pretty successful investment for T-Mobile, while it has not reached the popularity of the iPhone, it did surpass one million handsets sold.  In addition, the software has continued to get better, as the 1.5 update began rolling out to G1 users.  In terms of the Google Android Market, there are around 4,900 apps that can be downloaded.  As a result, T-Mobile wanted to market another similar phone running on Google Android.  Today, word was released that T-Mobile would begin selling the G2 sometime in the early summer.

For those of us who have been paying attention to the latest tech news, then I’m sure you are familiar with the Palm Pre being available on June 6, as well as the next iPhone coming out shortly after.  With two major handsets coming out in the early summer, are customers prepared for a third, Android handset?  For customers who are looking for a new, solid smartphone, they will have pretty much three strong options.  They can choose AT&T’s latest Apple iPhone, go to Sprint for their Palm Pre, or check out T-Mobile’s G1 follow-up device.  All I can say is it will be interesting to see which smartphone emerges from the summer battle victorious (if any phone at all).

Shifting gears a little, the Palm Pre made news today as it will be the latest smartphone to star in a commercial.  Palm decided to share profits to benefit the IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America).  The ad will be emceed by Jason Alexander, as well as featuring one of the world’s best comedians.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however, it will be directed by Tarsem, and the production crew features 1,000 martial art performers who will be led by none other than Sun Yupeng.  A man who became famous after choreographing the opening ceremonies for the last Summer Olympics.  It was quite a show, if I do say so myself.  The advertisement will help explain the Pre’s key features.

The ad will be shown at a special Pre launch tomorrow in Hollywood.  If you cannot attend, the ad will be aired on Palm’s Facebook page.
