Microsoft has officially announced the new Zune lineup complete with accessories. Microsoft has made some nice and welcome changes to the Zune, but there are still a few that seem to have been left off, but I would say progress has been made. Lets get into the details…
The first is the Zune 80, the new 80GB players that will serve as the upgrade to the current 30GB model. This one includes the new Zune Pad with four way touch-sensitive d-pad. The Zune 80 will retail for $250 and ships with a set of premium headphones. The Zune 80 will be available in black only at the time of launch. The new 80GB Zune will be just a little smaller than the previous 30GB model and the display will be increased by .2 inches, now at 3.2 inches.
The other models are the long suspected 4GB and 8GB flash models, which are officially the Zune 4 and Zune 8. These models also use the new Zune Pad and will retail for $150 and $200. Unlike the Zune 80 the flash models will be available in several colors; green, black, red and pink. The flash models will have a 1.8 inch display, which is slightly smaller as compared to the current iPod nano.
Aside from the players, where the details were not that much of a mystery we also have a complete lineup of accessories to include:
The current 30GB Zune, that will now be called the Zune 30 will receive a software update to get the new redesigned user interface and feature parity. Which is nice because current owners are not being left out and made to feel like they should have to purchase a new player just to get some new software features.
The new Zune’s will finally have podcast support, Wi-Fi sync and also now have native support for h.264 and MPEG-4 codecs . The 3-day limit on any “squirted” songs will be removed, however they can still only be played 3 times. The Zune music store is now going to be DRM-free and current users will be given an option to upgrade their tracks in the future. Sadly even with the recent wireless iTunes music store the Zune will still be limited to downloading music on the PC and syncing it over. The newly announced Zune lineup will begin shipping in November however no specific date was announced.
