The line length is really a margin control. Nice option.

Now a textbook example. Nice image of fish biology. To look up a word, bring your cursor to a word, and the bottom of the screen shows you a definition. If you want a more extensive definition, you can get to that as well. New feature for Kindle DX:
not only can you change the font size
you can decide how many words per line.

Jeff is showing off how to scan through stories quickly using the 5-way controller. You can also go to the sections list to find your particular section. You can view summaries of headlines (kind of like an RSS feed with a sentence of content).

Video’s fixed. Spoke too soon. Demo has been halted, and now restarted. Back to newspapers.
10:01 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
“I’m going to choose to find this hilarious.” (re the video issue).
10:00 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Video on the demo has gone backwards. Jeff’s working the crowd, “Think of yourself seeing this through a mirror.”

The Kindle DX doesn’t have any “DX” branding from what I can see. The top of the device just says “amazon kindle.” Jeff just showed off sheet music and it looked good. Now he’s showing off some paper about rockets. Looks good.

We’ll have video of the demo up soon.

Kindle will allow the NYT to provide delivery to places they normally couldn’t with their print version. Demo time with Kindle DX

NY Times Chairman, Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr. is talking about how they’ve been waiting for a technology like this. He’s talking about reinvention for digital media regarding the newspaper industry.
09:53 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Jeff said “automagically” re: delivery of newspapers. This summer - 3 newspapers will offer Kindle DX for reduced prices in exchange for long term commitments re: subscriptions New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe
09:52 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
The President of Case Western Reserve is now done (she talked about how great technology has been in academics). Jeff “What about newspapers?”
09:49 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
What about the students? Got the textbooks and the device—5 top universities will trial Kindle DX this fall ASU, Case Western, Princeton, Reed College, Univ. of Virginia. Pres. of Case Western is here.
09:48 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Auto rotate built in. Complex structure is supposed to be easier to see. Now why would you want to buy a regular Kindle 2 then? Textbooks shine with this display. Reached agreement w/ 3 leading textbook publishers—represent 60% of the text books. Jeff is showing examples of textbooks on the Kindle dx. They look good.
09:48 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Kindle DX is the name, it’s what we all expected so far.

Paper is just better to read off of when compared to a laptop. Now “just one thing” most of the docs we print and read are 8 1/2” x 11” Anyone see where this is going?
09:43 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Jeff Bezos is talking about the lack of the paperless society. We print waaay too much. Jeff is hating on the ink toner cartridges of printers. “Why do we print so much?”
09:39 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
He’s talking about how the Kindle Store has added 275k books in the last 3 months. Kindle sales are now 35% of books (if there’s a kindle version).
09:38 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Jeff Bezos is taking the stage.
09:28 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Lots of chatter in the audience about what’s expected. Will it have a touchscreen or not? How will it work as a textbook? The music is suggesting we get aboard the “Love Train.”
09:12 AMIyaz Akhtar said:
Big stage with a nice large screen and a podium.

We’re seated in the second row. Coverage is coming up soon.
