LG to launch their own app store on July 14

by Natesh Sood on Jul 13, 2009 at 02:21 PM

Many have tried to follow Apple and compete with their App Store, such as Android, RIM, and Palm, just to name a few.  Now, it seems LG wants to join the party as they plan to launch their LG Application Store starting tomorrow, July 14, 2009, with the debut taking place in Asia.  Application stores can be a profitable venture for many handset manufacturers, however, all the competition in the area must be considered.  LG plans to launch its LG Application Store with 1,400 apps to start and 100 of which will be sold at no cost.

LG, known for their quality phones, still trail Nokia and Samsung in handsets sold, so LG hopes their Application Store can help sell more devices.  Starting tomorrow, the Application Store will be available in countries such as Malaysia, Australia, and other pacific island Asian countries.

LG hopes to reach Europe and South America at the end of 2009, at a time which they hope the store reaches 2,000+ apps.  Possibly in a strategic maneuver, LG will not make the Application Store available in the United States by year’s end.  However, they did not rule out making it available in the United States, but a timetable has not been announced.  The U.S. is home to the App Store and RIM’s own BlackBerry App World.  A fifth competitor in an already crowded app store market may not prove profitable for LG.

It will be interesting to see how the launch goes tomorrow and how the apps are priced.
