Starting December 11, JetBlue Airways will begin offering a free limited e-mail and instant messaging (IM) service to their passengers. However, general Web surfing and downloading email attachments are still not going to be possible because of broadband limits.
Thanks to the airline’s partnership with Research in Motion, BlackBerry models 8820 and Curve 8320 are allowed to access and send emails during the flight. Laptops, on the other hand, are limited to Yahoo email and instant messaging.
All electronic devices including laptops and mobile phones must still be turned off during takeoff and landing. These devices can only be switched on once the plane reaches 10,000 feet. The cellular service of the two BlackBerry models must also be turned off during the entire flight.
The test will begin with Airbus A320 on Flight 641 from New York to San Francisco. Partnerships with Yahoo! and BlackBerry are not exclusive so it is very likely that JetBlue will also deal with other email services like Google Mail and Hotmail in the future.
