Full FeediPhone launches from Cisco, not Apple
So Brian from Gizmodo was right afterall - well, kind of. The iPhone that he said would launch today turned out not to be an APPLE iPhone at all, rather a CISCO iPhone. The iPhone trademark has actually been owned by Cisco since 1996 - when they acquired Infogear, and is a new line of VoIP handsets headed for the market. Here’s a clip from Cisco’s announcement:
Dennis Vogel, a product manager for Cisco, says the use of the iPhone name is part of a larger strategic vision concerning networked homes. Cisco CEO John Chambers will expand on that strategy in remarks at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
It’s kind of a screwy situation since clearly Cisco wanted to capitalize on the popularity of their trademarked name, iPhone, while Apple has interest in it as well. According to MacRumors, Apple has owned iPhone.org since 1999, and has since filed for several trademarks referring to such an “iPhone.” Looks like Kevin Rose was right to call it the “Apple Phone.” And my speculations haven’t been proven to be wrong yet.
Update 1/9/2007: Apple has now officially launched the iPhone as well.

Cisco had the name first….
on January 11, 2007 at 02:16 PM - LINKFirst come first serve is a bad policy, trademarking is used to protect ideas originally devolped by the creator. Apples iPhone is not even in the same product line, and is not trying to take any of the glory that CISCOs phone claims. Apple should be able to walk away with the name right now, but will probably settle anyway
