Intel to manufature small-size, high-capacity flash memory

by Shawn Ingram on Nov 24, 2008 at 02:15 PM

Intel LogoIt seems fairly obvious by now that NAND flash memory is slowly overtaking hard drive based memory.  With new chips from Intel and Micron, it just came a step closer.  The two companies have been working together on flash memory and have announced that they are mass producing standard 300mm chips with 32Gb of storage space.

This is the largest amount of space on such small chps that will be available to consumers when the chips are released.  It is estimated by the Electronista article that devices using these chips could be slated for early 2009.  Devices would most likely include MP3 players, cell phones, and other such small consumer devices that need smaller chips.  It may even be possible that we see these chips in the iPhone of iPod touch in coming iterations.

Normally, larger storage isn’t much to be excited about, hard drives seem to increase in size every two or three months.  But, advances in flash memory is particularly relevant given the rise of the iPhone and other cell phones that use flash memory.  There are some that were disappointed with the latest iPhone and iPod touch iterations because the storage didn’t increase.  Perhaps Apple can give them the 64GB touch and 32GB iPhone that some have wanted for a while, at which point they’ll complain they can’t get 128Gb.
