I’ve been waiting to add a GPS unit to my personal collection, but it seems to be missing things (I can only do one thing on it?).  Intel agrees.  They see a device, a MID (Mobile Internet Device), that that keeps us in contact, provides entertainment, and can handle GPS…all on Linux.  Seems a presentation was mistakenly put up on the Intel site in preparation for the Intel Developer Forum in Bejing this week.

The design list is nice:

• 4.5-6” display
• Instant on
• Linux
• Touchscreen

Seemingly tapping into Palm’s somewhat lost message in their LifeDrive, Intel looks to be on target in building something that will sell, and I don’t think just to me.  Intel looks to keep target consumers with MIDS and mobile professionals with UMPCs (that still boot to Windows).

Intel’s design references a 500MB memory and a design small enough to fit in a purse (or murse, as the case may be).

Expect more on MIDs and UMPCs later this week as Intel shows off its wares.
