Imation Corp has announced the addition of two new products to its Apollo line of external hard drives. The first is the Apollo Expert, a 2.5-inch portable hard drive encased in a protective skin and packaged with a swivel stand that allows the device to be placed vertically or horizontally.  The second device is the Apollo Pro, a 3.5-inch external hard drive with wireless USB capability that helps reduce cord clutter.

“We design our Apollo EHDs to be utilitarian and iconic,” said Subodh Kulkarni, vice president, Global Commercial Business, R&D and Manufacturing, Imation. “Utilitarian, because Apollo drives deliver the features and pure data storage performance that users need and crave; iconic, because Apollo drives simply look very good. Both lines provide a unique mix of features and benefits in both portable and desktop options, and Imation’s Apollo Pro line offers consumers the Apollo Pro WX – an easy-to-use EHD that enables a cable-free, hassle-free workspace.” 

Both lines offer integrated stands, one touch backup, built in sleep mode, and low capacity/data activity indicator lights, and are compatible with both PCs and Macs. While the Pro line provides wireless USB capability, the Expert line offers the more secure and traditional wired USB connection.

Storage sizes range from 250GB to 1.5 TB. Imation plans to make them available worldwide in time for the holiday shopping season, so be sure to check with your local retailer or favorite e-tailer for pricing information.

Since wireless USB is faster than both WiFi and Bluetooth, the Pro may become one hot device upon its release. Wireless USB has data rates of up to 480 megabits-per-second when two devices are within 10 feet and 110 Megabits-per-second within 30 feet.  Pretty sweet!
