Help your mom figure out computer woes with Skype screen sharing
You’ve gotten that call a number of times. “My computer isn’t working.” The only problem is explaining how to fix something may take much longer than it would take to actually fix something. So what can you do to avoid this? Screen sharing over the Internet is pretty helpful.
Skype just added in a screen sharing feature in its Windows software. All you’ve got to do is put the icon on your Mom’s Windows machine and you’ll be all set.
In the old days, I used to use a combination of Hamachi and VNC. Hamachi let you create a VPN (virtual private network) with very little work at all. Hamachi then was purchased by LogMeIn and goes by the name of “LogMeIn Hamachi,” clever, huh?
Screen sharing via Skype was already rolled out in the Mac version several months ago. Additionally, iChat in the latest version of Mac OS X already had screen sharing built in. Skype will allow screen sharing between Mac and Windows users as long as they are using Skype. That’s pretty handy and it’s still free.
