My, my Google. That was quick. I’ll just bet you’re a ton of fun on a date. Launched just this past July, Google’s “Lively” program (in hindsight, one can’t help but chuckle at the name they chose), is already being killed off. I can hear the trumpets in the background as I type.
I guess all those risque room names and sex rooms weren’t even enough to keep you afloat, though they did cause quite a stir. But, even that wasn’t enough to keep the public’s interest focused on this dying program. Poor Google. I guess you aren’t the King of All things Internet after all…at least not when your “idea” is one you pretty much just copied.
Google does okay with products where it actually shows innovation. But when it just tries to spew out an “already there” regurgitation, it fails. No one thought Google search would do well when it first came out; the search realm was already covered. But Google offered something a little different, and now they pretty much kick search engine ass. Same with Gmail, it was new and different enough to succeed.
On its official blog, Google posted last night that ““Despite all the virtual high fives and creative rooms everyone has enjoyed in the last four and a half months, we’ve decided to shut Lively down at the end of the year. It has been a tough decision, but we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business.” “Creative rooms.” Heh. That’s one name for the Porn Star ‘R Us room.
The post also suggested that there would not be layoffs due to the site closing, and that any employees that had been working on the Lively team would be moved to other areas within the company. Google also suggests to “all Lively users to capture your hard work by taking videos and screenshots of your rooms” since the project is having the plug pulled come the end of the year.
Here’s an idea Google, you are certainly strong enough and show you have enough people with brains and creativity working the team; stop stealing “been there, done that” ideas and focus on what you are capable of if you try: being innovative and savvy and creative, and dazzle us with something new.
