Google to world: Stop using IE6 already!

What the?  In an obvious attempt to promote their own Chrome browser, Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 and run Firefox or Chrome instead.  With these other browsers, Google promises that Gmail will run “twice as fast.”  Additional perks of the switch include fast JavaScript engines and greater compatibility with web standards.

IE6 users were sent targeted messages on their menu bar with the subject line of “Get Gmail Faster” when they log on.  If the link is used, browsers will go to a promotional page for Firefox and Chrome where they can download the selected browser.  On this page, Internet Explorer 6 is listed as an unsupported browser for Gmail.

So, should you make the switch?  Although it’s an obvious ploy to promote Chrome, it is not unusual for companies to urge users to upgrade.  Even Microsoft recommends users to upgrade to newer versions of IE.  You can test out Chrome or Firefox and see if they produce better results than your IE6.
