Google Chrome: now with bookmark syncing

by Robert Nelson on Aug 18, 2009 at 06:05 AM

Yesterday was a big day for Chrome in terms of being able to sync and backup your bookmarks.  We saw not one, but two methods for syncing and backing up your bookmarks get announced.  Unfortunately, at this time both options require the user to be running the latest dev build of Chrome, which means that for many users this is still just a feature that is coming soon.

Anyway, the first option is more official, and also the one that is not limited to a private beta.  It is coming from Google and allows the user to sync with Google Bookmarks.  In order to get this option working, there are a few little changes that need to be made.  First, right-click on the shortcut icon for Chrome and select Properties and then edit the Target field by adding “—enable-sync” at the end.  After that is complete, save your change, restart your browser and then you should have an option to “Sync my bookmarks” under the Tools menu.  From there you will have to enter your user name and password for your Google Bookmarks account.

The second option is from Xmarks, who are perhaps a little better known for their current syncing option, which used to go by the name of Foxmarks.  Xmarks is a cross platform solution and allows the user to sync between Chrome, Firefox, IE, and Safari.  Sadly, the Xmarks option is still available only as a private beta and does require you to sign up an hope to get accepted, which you can do at the read link below.

Basically, neither option is really ready for primetime just yet, especially considering these are not able to be run with the latest stable version of Chrome.  But on the other hand, thinking positive, this is good news and personally this is the news that will soon allow me to begin using Chrome a little more often on a PC because I am and have been an Xmarks user.
