Google Android app: Go green with Ecorio

by Iyaz Akhtar on Oct 6, 2008 at 03:40 PM

Ecorio, the app that helps you go green on Google AndroidEcorio was one of the Android applications shown off at the T-Mobile G1 event.  The app tracks “your mobile carbon footprint” and is one of the winners in the Google Android Developer Challenge.

Interface

Ecorio has a very easy and simple interface.  The home screen shows your travel carbon footprint, displays some shortcuts and the four main features at the bottom of the screen (Start, Reduce, Inspire, and Offset).  The application runs in the background and tracks your trips.  There are no features hidden in a submenu of a menu.  The entire application is laid out cleanly.

Inspire: Ecorio’s social network

“Inspire” is the cool social networking feature of Ecorio.  This is the kind of thing where a social network makes a lot of sense.  You can see how others are reducing their carbon footprint and put together a carpool using the Inspire feature.

Covering your mobile footprint

Currently, the application is limited since it only covers your mobile footprint.  If you do anything like put solar panels on your home or build a windmill, Ecorio will be unaware of these things that reduce your footprint.  If you can’t put up a windmill in your apartment, Ecorio also lets you buy carbon offsets right from their application.

Energy-efficient routes?

I asked the Ecorio guys if they had any plans to integrate with Google Maps.  In particular, if Ecorio could put together their eco-friendly system with maps to generate fuel-efficient routes.  I mentioned how UPS created a huge savings by reducing left turns to save gas.

The Ecorio guys looked at me like a light bulb had gone on above their heads.  They told me that they did not have such integration now, but that sounded like a good idea.  Currently, the application can provide the user with public transportation options thanks to Google Transit.

Since Android is open to all, it would not surprise me to see an application that calculates the most energy-efficient trips.  Overall, Ecorio is an admirable application with a noble cause.  This just shows you that almost any type of application is possible on the Android system.

    Hi everyone,

I have build an application for the G1 called mShare. Let me know what you guys think. You can download it from the app store.

If you don’t have a G1, you can get a version for other OS, http://mhome.guiang.net.

Or text message ‘mtools’ to 41411.
