Get-a-Mac campaign takes focus on Windows Vista upgrade hassles

by Doug Berger on Jan 16, 2007 at 04:27 PM

As someone who’s not an Apple fanboy, I’m usually not a fan of the Get-a-Mac commercials.  The company has just launched their new Surgery campaign focusing on how big of a hassle it’s going to be upgrading to Windows Vista.  I agree it is going to be a pain for some - since you have to check if your computer is comaptible or not (not rocket science).  But wait… isn’t Apple releasing a new OS as well?

I have a G4 iMac that is 4 years old. It came with 1 GB RAM and is a 1 GHz machine. I am currently running Tiger and have run versions of OS X from version 1 to the current version OS X 10.4.8. No problems with any of the upgrades...and I haven’t had to install any hardware in order to do that.

I have no qualms about installing the upcoming Leopard version of OS X.

    God bless,

    Joe

Yes, they are and anyone running OS X 10.4.x will be able to run 10.5 just fine thank you. No applications are available (or needed) from Apple to check compatibily with your computer.

Yup, opened up a can there, Mr. Berger. There are an awful lot of Mac users out there, and by portraying a Mac OS point update in the same light as the upgrade from 2k or XP to Vista, you’re missing the mark. It’s like comparing the iPhone to the RAZR. They are two radically different approaches to the market, and somebody who is going to spend the money on one of the items isn’t likely to spend the money on the other, no matter how much “better” it may be. To instal 10.5.0 on my PowerBook, I’ll have to go to the Apple Store, grab the DVD, insert it into my drive, and click “install.” Unless your PC was built within the last year, you aren’t going to be able to install Vista that easily. You’re looking at, at the very least, an upgrade of your video card, if not the processor and RAM (most PC users, not power users who are likely to read Gadgetell, will not know how to install the hardware to run the software). Any Mac user who can install Microsoft Office can install an OS update. It’s going to take billions of dollars, according to Microsoft, to install and support Vista.
