Thinking of jumping to Vista? If Bill Gates is to be believed, maybe we should all just wait.
Gates, once again is revealing some details on Microsoft’s next operating system as he told an audience in Tokyo attending the Windows Digital Lifestyle Conference, “We’re hard at work … on the next version, which we call Windows 7. I’m very excited about the work being done there ... to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone.”
While analysts were relatively ho-hum about Gates’ latest pronouncements, his earlier statement in April put industry observers into a buzz when he allegedly said that Windows 7 would be out in the next year or so. Microsoft did not clarify whether their Founder and Chairman of the Board was talking about the beginning of alpha or beta testing, or whether he meant actually releasing Windows 7 on a quickened schedule.
The official company line is that the next version of Windows is scheduled to come out three years from the commercial release of Windows Vista. That should be on Q1 of 2010—not next year – since Vista launched on January 30, 2007.
Vista’s horrid reputation makes many IT decision makers to ponder whether or not they should migrate to Windows Vista or wait for Windows 7. While Gates’ statements may support the decision to wait, the company’s official calendar for Windows 7 and how out of date enterprise users’ systems will be by then if they sit Vista out could make that decision a wrong one.
