Gadgetell v2 giveaway: NeoDigits HELIOS X5000 HD Network Media Player

by Adam Berger on Nov 8, 2006 at 05:27 AM

NeoDigits Helios X5000 media player 1080p streaming upscaling

In case you missed the first contest we’ll repeat…

The Gadgetell redesign is live causing quite a buzz here at headquarters. On top of that we just celebrated our first birthday...on October 9th - yes we still will accept presents - so we have a lot to be happy about. Most importantly we are thankful that you, our loyal readers, keep coming back day after day, searching for something to scratch that tech itch. While we will celebrate a bit here, this giveaway is our way to celebrate with you.

The second prize is the NeoDigits HELIOS X5000 streaming media player. This Wi-Fi enabled, multi-media file playing, iTunes/Napster streaming, RSS reading, 1080p up-converting DVD player is listed for $579 on the non-Gadgetell market, but just a comment is required here.

To enter: All you have to do is leave a comment with a tip on the redesign (must be something more than just “it looks good to me"). We will be giving away at least one gadget away each week until we run out. This post will close next Monday the 13th, then we’ll pick the winner at random, assuming you don’t cheat.

The rules:

  • You may only enter this contest one time

  • You can only win once during the extent of the “v2 giveaway” contest, but can enter each one

  • The winner will be sent a notice via email and has 72 hours to reply with their mailing address to claim their prize—make sure you use a valid email address
  • You will be shipped your prize as soon as we get it into the mail, but don’t worry it’s coming

  • Good luck!

Seeing as I’ve been with you boys from the beginning, all I can say is that this is quite impressive.  I really like the new side navigation bar which allows for organized, seemless surfing.

Good job Berger boys and keep it up.

Hey guys, I love the new nav bar, makes it so much easier to search through topics that interest us, as well as the great giveaways you guys are having, someone’s going to be happy walking off with this :) have a good one guys, and keep up the good work.

Gentleman - I think the redesign is great however I think you need to fix the navigation bar - when the drop down arrows are selected, it brings you back to the top of the page causing you to have to scroll back down to the drop down menu you chose (if it falls below the fold) - might want to check it out!

woohoo!!!...love your site but in Firefox 2.0 the pull-downs aren’t right...otherwise the design is great....I load this with My Morning Coffee extension everyday........

It’s a little busy, in my opinion. The article text in the middle gets a bit crowded out by the column to the right, and the “recent comments” section at the top of the right-bar is a little redundant. Apart from that, looks good!

  • The green color, found throughout as a highlight color, specifically in a solid line at the top of the page, needs to be transformed into a more true blue color. The green doen’t go with the gray and red. In fact, it looks a little Christmasy with the red.

I like a full and bigger picture better than a small and cropped one currently displayed for older news. That way I don’t have to do additional click just to see the pictures.

  • Seems a bit boxy but is chuck full of great new information.

  • Ken said:

Yes, it is more attractive than before.  One thing I’d say though is that the serif font for the body of the text is harder to read than the san serif you’ve got in the sidebar.  How about using san serif throughout?

first time visiting, interesting setup. glad you considered a refresh on the website look, some websites tend to stick with the same old system w/o improvments.

In terms of improvements I would comment on integrating your advertising banners a bit better then chunking them in the traditional spots. for instance the main banner at the top could move up and to the right of your left-hand logo, thereby pushing the page content up. Also consider placing the small square banner ads into the comment column, alternating every 5th comment or some such… then you could use a wider banner size but still keep with you alternating color scheme…

it would be helpful if you left-hand nav bar could remember the main area you were in.... so if your user jumps to features, it passes an identifier in the url string that would ‘pop-open’ the part of the nav area on the new page

The design is okay, but it seems a bit too blocky for my liking. Maybe add rounded edges and improve the flow.

This would be a nice addition to the DLP I bought.  Unfortunately, I spent my money on that so I can’t buy one right now.

  • Sui said:

    I love the site.

The one addition i would as is a Home Recording to the audio/video pulldown. Products like the H4 would fit in there as well as applications that allow you to record, mix and publish music from home.

other than that, keep up the good work!!

  • Benjy said:

I think the design looks fine given the product.  What I’m most concerned with is the performance, I’m not buying it for the looks.  That be how I puts it.
    Keep gadging......

    I love Doug!!

The colors are very nice, very contemporary.

The navigation bar on the left side - if you open a category and select a sub category, after you’ve been moved to that page, I would think the navigation bar would stay to the category you selected… Just an idea.

Oh yeah, and “It looks good to me” :-)

I like this site, and there are a few bugs you guys have worked out.  There are a few comments or suggestions that I would leave:

1.) Less scrolling on each page would be a nice feature, less top page blogs.

2.) When you open a category on any page (left handed side drop down menu), it shouldn’t return you to the top of the page.  This may just be the nature of the beast, I am not sure.

3.) I don’t even know if the survey that states “What are you looking forward to for christmas” on the right hand side is yours, but the numbers are unreadable.

You guys have done a great job!  Keep up the good work, and never get comfortable with what you have.  Evolve!

Easy on the eyes!  I like it.... crisp and clean.

I love the new design, it looks more professional in my opinion, and besides the issue with the navigation bar and the recent comments being posted “lower” than it appears it should, the only issue I have with the design is that reviews/info on new tech are separated by too much distance for my eyes.  I have to scroll down more than I would prefer to in order to read more than one or two reviews.  Other than that, I love the site.  Good job guys.

  • chrispix said:

The gadgetell banner at the top of the screen wastes too much screen space, and is unnecessary. There’s plenty on the page to remind you that you’re looking at gadgetell.

  • Jim Furchtbar said:

Looks pretty interesting. 1080p upconvert? New to me. I have heard of 1080i. If I win I will give a review.

  • Delta said:

The alternating colors in the sidebar look really spiffy when you scroll fast. Unlike others, I prefer the serif font and finf it shows up really well with ClearType. The new navigation speaks for itself and the bottom navigation rawks too. You guys are excellent. Keep up the great work!

  • Delta said:

Oh… And my tip. I forgot! Well, the pastel look is great. But will you consider adding customizable themes for us? It could store unique cookies with our preferences. Say, if I wanted a lime-green design, lime-green it would be, and every time I visit.

If I want a Christmas theme, then let it be green and red!

    Hello.
I’ve arrived to your web searching for a Divx-HD player.
I don’t speak english very well, but I’d like to say that the web is very well organized and the SIZE of the font is perfect for reading.
I’m smashing my poor eyes surfing on the NET, trying to read so minute fonts....
Where is the problem for using BIG FONTS, please????
    A 10/10 in this department.
    Greetings from Catalonia.
