What is it?
The IPEVO Kaleido R7 is an Internet-connected digital picture frame available for $149 at store.ipevo.com.
The Good
The design is top notch and the menu system is very modern. The rotating display allows you to view images in portrait or landscape. The viewing angle on the Kaleido R7 is terrific in the landscape mode. Placing a SD card or USB thumb drive into the device allows you to view its contents.
Using the included EyeStage software, you can easily set up RSS feeds to be displayed on the picture frame via your computer. The fact that you can set up RSS feeds and other settings of the picture frame (like transitions and zooming) from your computer makes things a lot easier than trying to navigate via directional buttons on the actual frame.
The Bad
While you can view images from a SD card, RSS feeds require the EyeStage software to be running on a computer in order for them to be displayed on the frame. Without a computer running the software to serve up content, the Kaleido R7 becomes pretty ordinary. The viewing angle when the display is in portrait mode is not as good as landscape mode.
The Crux
If you don’t mind having a computer on all the time serving up content to the Kaleido R7, then the device will be quite enjoyable to have. If used as a simple picture frame, the Kaleido R7 performs well. Hopefully, the next revision will be able to pull down content on its own.
