Gadgetell First Look: Accoona searches ‘news’ and ‘business’

by Adam Berger on May 15, 2006 at 05:02 PM

AcoonaWe know, we know, there are already so many search engines out there - who needs one more. Well we don’t develop them though there are some non-Google ones that we love.

The Accoona search engine takes a different spin on searches, narrowing down your field. It was first launched with the help of Bill Clinton in 2004 (but we guess it got lost in the tech boom bust). Since then the company has developed Artificial Intelligence search technology that greatly improves the quantity and quality of results by seeking out the context of keywords rather than the keywords alone. Accoona’s new “SuperTarget” search lets users search for items in the news & businesses categories, with the capability of narrowing down their search by categories (such as word, date, region, etc. for news & employee #, annual revenue, region, etc. in businesses).

On first use, I found this to be very helpful when I am searching for news and/or business related articles. I like the ability to narrow down my searches but I am not sure multiple drop down menus are the way to go. I would rather prefer category links that hone in, or a semantic map like Quintura. It is worth checking out, especially if you are searching news site and or business news a lot.
