For many people, the G1 isn’t even so much about the phone as about the apps.  And one of the cool applications the G1 sports is called “Breadcrumbzs.”  Remember Hansel and Gretel?  Following the trail?  Well, hopefully this one won’t lead you into a oven to be eaten by some big-nosed witch, Halloween right around the corner or not.  But, it does sort of work the same way…well, if Hansel and Gretel would have had a G1 complete with camera phone that is.

With Breadcrumbz, you take pictures with the camera phone to give directions.  You can add tags or little arrows or other signs to help direct your viewer.  You can also use voice markers.  The program uses GPS, Google Maps, and, of course, your phone’s camera to map the route.

This process might seem useless (why not just use a map you might ask), but actually is quite handy, especially when on foot.  It isn’t really intending to plot a car route across the country, more for a walking tour through a town to find all the cool hidden destinations.  It’s also great for hikers or bikers.

Breadcrumbz will clock the time between points, as well as distance, which is helpful for whomever you are sharing the route with to give them a pretty good estimation of how far between “checkpoints.”  Any routes mapped can be saved to either the phone’s memory or an expansion card, so you can use them again and again.  You know, in case you or your friends get lost in the woods and find yourself facing that candy cottage with a cackling stranger inviting you in.

Breadcrumbz is definitely a application with a trail worth following.
