Surprisingly, though this is not made by Sony, rather by Phillips who appear to have hijacked the poorly spelled color in their product name. Beneath the fancy wording and scientific explanations is the fact the device is an alarm clock that uses new light technology (yes you guessed it, blue light) to sight against S.A.D.
It does this by emitting a soft comfortable blue light which your body responds to better than harsh white light, thus helping you to see and making you feel better. Apparently it doesn’t even need to be bright, somehow it will effect your body by just being visible, exactly how I don’t think anyone outside of Phillips marketing department knows.
Now this is all well and good up to a point, where I realized two things. The first, and most crucial is that it doesn’t really do anything. I was expecting it to have a real purpose to justify the price tag, but no, if you negotiate your way through the unnecessary scientific jargon you find it is just an incredibly small ineffective light.
And that is my second point: the price. It comes in at a scary $279, which can’t be good for anyone’s state of mind when you realized you are buying a blue light. There are loads of different ways to fight S.A.D and you don’t have to buy something scientifically proven or expensive, sometimes a hot cup of tea will do.
In conclusion, it’s a nice idea if a little pointless and very expensive. If you really suffer from S.A.D. consider a holiday to Mexico as it may do you more good! Perhaps it is just a symptom of our day and age where we feel the need to solve every problem and companies are happy to provide a solution at a suitable price, but I think there is a limit, and this is it.
