EMI to sell DRM-free music

by Michael Yurechko on Apr 2, 2007 at 02:53 PM

EMIHours after April Fools day, it seems Steve Jobs himself will be making a surprise appearance in London to announce that EMI will start selling DRM-free music, more specifically on the iTunes Store. What does this mean to the rest of us? Not too much, but if you’re into the EMI catalog (which includes the Beatles and Queen) and using a different Mp3 player than an iPod, you’re in luck.

We don’t know whether EMI will end up regretting this decision (we doubt it), or whether this announcement will start a domino effect with other record labels, essentially spelling the end of DRM forever (hey, we can dream). This is a big gamble for EMI but hopefully it will pay off for all of us.
