Ectaco jetBook reader could have been the Kindle killer

Looks like Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader may be facing a good rival soon courtesy of a company named Ectaco. The newly released Ectaco jetBook reader is lightweight and portable and is capable of storing thousands of e-books.
The jetBook reader looks trendy, as exemplified by the red external design with some rugged edges on its side that mimics a traditional notebook spring binders. It was made this to probably attract traditional book readers who just won’t part ways with printed books. Weighing only 7.5 ounces, the jetBook reader would fit perfectly into the palm of the hand.
The jetBook reader supports an easy-to-scan high-resolution 5-inch display with a viewing angle close to 180 degrees that is fully customizable to suit a user’s needs. Text size and font fact are fully adjustable to help users who have difficulty seeing print books. jetBook also supports bookmarks for searching and cross-referencing different parts of an e-book. And it also come pre-loaded with English-Russian, English-Polish and English explanatory dictionaries.
Those features maybe enough to call the jetBook reader a Kindle Reader, but it doesn’t have the support of a big company such as Amazon which happens to specialize on book distribution as well. Another feature that the jetBook reader lacks and which happens to be Kindle’s strongest selling point is the wireless connectivity. It would have been better if jetBook users could connect wirelessly to the Internet instead using a USB cable to connect the reader into their PCs to upload e-Books.
But still, the jetBook reader seems a good e-Book reader and sells $50 cheaper than the kindle at $349. I guess that’s the price you needed to pay to have a wireless connectivity in the device. If wireless connectivity is not a big issue, you may want to give it a spin, if not you’d be better off with the Kindle.

on April 11, 2008 at 04:29 AM - LINKDon’t waste your time with the Ectaco e-book. I made the stupid mistake of doing so and quickly became disenchanted with their “customer (not) service”. There are virtually NO BOOKS you can buy for this device. They make you return it within 7 days (with a 6.5% return fee) AND if you try to get questions answered during your trial period, they don’t answer phones or emails. Their business model is to sell and charge for return. Nothing but a scam as far as I can tell.
