E3 2006: Xbox 360 HD-DVD accessory
We learned back at CES that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 would support the HD-DVD optical disc format, coinciding with Microsoft’s support for HD-DVD and loud distaste of Blu-ray. Today at E3 Microsoft officially announced the HD-DVD accessory drive for the 360. It will connect to the 360 via USB powering the drive while delivering HD video output and digital surround sound.
According to they guys in Redmond this is just one of several new accessories being announced at E3 for the 360, including the price announcement:
“Stay tuned. We decided to save that good news for another day, but we’re clearly out to make this an affordable option for Xbox 360 owners”

I don’t get it? Why buy an HD DVD add on for the XBox 360 rather than a stand alone HD DVD Player which will certainly come down in price as they are more widely released. What are you saving? The new HD DVD players will only need one included HDMI cable to hook up to the TV anyway so it’s not saving you from a lot of excess cables and it would be smarter to keep the Xbox & HD DVD separate so they could be used simultaneously by different household members. A lot of hype over a minimally significant add-on.
