Disney may hop on HD-DVD

by Adam Berger on Mar 21, 2006 at 04:06 AM

HD-DVDIn an unexpected move it seems that Disney may offer their video content in HD-DVD in addition to their current commitment to Blu-ray. AS far as I remember this is the first time that a major studio has added HD-DVD since being committed to Blu-ray.

According to an article published by Variety.com, Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, dropped a hint that Disney may end up playing both sides in the high-definition DVD format war, during the firm’s annual meeting with shareholders. In response to a shareholder question, Iger said company continues to back Sony’s Blu-Ray format, but added, “We probably will publish in both formats.”

While a move like this may make the studio more nimble incase HD wins the format war, this move would only result in maintaining a standstill, since it will increase options across both sides.
