MC Hammer, Geoffrey Arone and Anthony Young of Flock have launched a new video website specifically aimed at allowing viewers to share videos of themselves dancing called DanceJam. If you search for dancing videos on YouTube, you’ll see that there are literally thousands of videos of people shaking their groove thing. Hammer, Arone and Young seem interested in funneling some of that user energy into DanceJam.

DanceJam has raised $1 million in funding, with money coming from Rustic Canyon, Ron Conway, Michael Arrington, Alex Algard, Michael Tanne, Geoff Ralston, Alex Welch and Ariel Poler.

Investor Michael Arrington of TechCrunch has already faced criticism over having MC Hammer on the TechCrunch40 panel this past September. TechCrunch readers questioned if the inclusion of Hammer on the panel had anything to do with Arrington’s investment in his startup. Arrington flatly denied it.

“That is just completely ridiculous and untrue. First of all, we were lucky to have someone with Hammer’s background to help fill out the panel. He’s intelligent and has been through a lot of ups and downs in his career - giving him wisdom. He is also clearly more connected to America’s youth than any other person who attended the event.”

Other readers have wondered if a site like DanceJam has any chance of success regardless of what gravitas Hammer may or may not bring. It’s certainly true that people seem to love to post videos of themselves and their friends dancing online, but it’s unclear why users will migrate away from sites that they already use.
