Crazy-awesome Twitter hacks

by JG Mason on Feb 4, 2009 at 11:19 PM

twittering tivoGod, I wish I were smarter.  There are some freaky-deaky cool folks hacking everyday things to alert you via Twitter.  Here are just two over the past few weeks that have caught my attention and make me wish I had the capacity to learn to code.

Up first, the thing Maytag and gang (which would be a cool band name according to Editor Iyaz) ought to be paying attention to: the Tweeting washing machine.  I work 20 feet from my washing machine but never remember to check it.  TiVo programmer Ryan Rose adapted his washing machine to Tweet when it was done doing its thing.  Awesome and so freaking simple.  Check out this video:

Yes, you can follow Rose’s washing machine here.  Even better, over 400 humans are following this machine.  Save your “false idol worship” banter.

The second took inspiration from a blog post about TiVo.  Wouldn’t it be great if your TiVo Tweeted about what it would be recording soon?  Darren Cloutier’s TiVo now does just that.  With the help of an old PC and some PHP skills, his recordings are broadcast out to Twitter.  Pretty cool stuff.

I think the best part is these are things I didn’t expect, but could use.  So far, that has been the beauty of Twitter.  Got a good Twitter story?  Let us know in the comments.

Thanks to Dave Zatz for the hook up.
