Around the Network

A big drawback of being out of the office can be the lack of the constant connection, and how difficult it can sometimes be to find one that is both reliable and affordable. A problem can arise when you are working with a group on that new project and one or more team members are without access, with the Cradlepoint PHS300 you can now set up a portable hotspot and share your 3G connection with others.
The Cradlepoint PHS300, a pocket-sized portable hotspot (PHS) that is battery powered. It allows you to offer your team Wi-Fi access based on your 3G modem or 3G phone. The PHS300 is powered by WiPipe technology, which is “highly intuitive” making the network easy to set up and there is no additional software required.
Overall the PHS300 functions similar to your home router allowing you to connect with any other device that is Wi-Fi capable, and has an option to leave the network open or secure it. The PHS300 has support for 802.11 b/g and will offer up to 3 hours if used with a phone and 1.5 hours if used with a modem, it also has an AC power adapter for those lucky enough to find a spare outlet.
The PHS300 does have its limits, currently it will work with USB modems from Sierra Wireless, Novatel Wireless, and Franklin Wireless, which are available only from Verizon or Sprint. If you are using a phone to create your hotspot, your provider will have to allow you to tether the device. Overall not bad, but it would be nice to see some more device support. The PHS300 will retail for $179.
